Whenever a dental emergency occurs, the key is to remain calm. Immediately seek out treatment if possible. While waiting, there are several actions that should be taken. For fractured and broken teeth, gently rinse the mouth with warm water to help keep the area clean. If there is bleeding, try biting down on gauze or a piece of cloth to control the blood flow. An ice pack can also be applied to the outer cheek to manage swelling. If pain is an issue, the problem can be addressed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Make sure to read the instructions when taking any medicine.

For a tooth that has fallen out entirely, it may be possible to save it if action is taken quickly. First, make sure that the bleeding is controlled. The tooth should be carefully cleaned off. Then, store it in a glass of milk or in your mouth to keep it moist. In most cases, a tooth can survive for a maximum of two hours outside the mouth. Action must be taken very quickly if there is any hope of saving the tooth.
